RANCHI (रांची) - the capital of Jharkhand, India
Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand. During the days before the state of Bihar was partitioned, Ranchi has been the centre of the movement in demand for a separate state for the tribal regions of south Bihar, northern Orissa, western West Bengal and the present eastern Chhattisgarh. The movement was a partial success and on 15th Nov. 2000 Bihar was split into two states – the northern part became Bihar and the southern part became Jharkhand. Essentially, Jharkhand encompasses the erstwhile Bihar regions of Chhota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas. Ranchi is often referred to as the City of Waterfalls, due to the presence of numerous large and small falls in and around the city. The most popular ones are Dassam Falls, Hundru Falls, Johna Falls, Hirni Falls and Panchghagh Falls. The city has developed on a hilly region. The hilly terrain combined with dense tropical forests makes the climatic conditions of Ranchi very pleasant. Summers are moderate and much less humid compared to the nearby towns of Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Dhanbad. In the olden days, the summers were very pleasant and Ranchi was referred to as a Hill Station. It was also the summer capital of the erstwhile state of Bihar. However, over a period of time, increasing industrialization, population growth and increasing pollution due to increase in motor vehicles have changed the weather of Ranchi to a great extent and average temperatures both during summers and winters have increased. |
